Ha Tinh is strategically located in the heart of Vietnam’s North–South axis, bordering Nghe An Province to the north, Quang Tri Province to the south, Laos to the west, and the East Sea to the east. This location holds significant strategic importance in terms of economic development, national defense, and international trade.
With an area of more than 5,994.85 km², Ha Tinh’s topography stretches from the majestic Truong Son Mountain Range to picturesque beaches, encompassing midland areas and fertile coastal plains. The province is endowed with abundant natural resources and scenic attractions, including the pristine Vu Quang forests, Ke Go Lake, Ngang Pass, La River, Ngan Sau River, and more than 137 km of coastline, offering substantial potential for marine economic development and tourism. The province currently has a population of approximately 1,623,061, predominantly the Kinh ethnic group. Ethnic minorities, including the Thai, Muong, Chut, and Lao peoples, number only a few hundred or several dozen and generally live interspersed in several communes, particularly in Huong Khe, Huong Son, and Vu Quang.
Located along Vietnam’s major national transport corridors and serving as one of the key gateways of the East–West Economic Corridor within the Greater Mekong Subregion, Ha Tinh possesses highly developed inter-regional and international transport connectivity:
Road transport: Ha Tinh enjoys seamless North–South connectivity through National Highway No. 1, the Ho Chi Minh Road, the North–South Expressway, and the DT.547 coastal road. The province also provides convenient access to Laos and the northeastern provinces of Thailand via National Highway No. 8 and National Highway No. 12C.
Railway: In addition to the existing North–South railway, the province is developing the Vung Ang – Tan Ap – Mu Gia railway, which will provide a direct rail connection to Laos and Thailand, opening up significant prospects for cross-border freight transportation.
Deep-water seaports: The Vung Ang – Son Duong international deep-water port complex is one of the largest seaport complexes in Vietnam and the North Central region. With a natural depth of approximately 20–22 meters, the port is capable of accommodating vessels with a capacity of up to 300,000–350,000 DWT. It serves as the shortest maritime gateway to the sea for landlocked Laos and northeastern Thailand, while also providing direct connections to major markets such as Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.
Air transport: Although Ha Tinh does not yet have a commercial airport in operation, the province has been approved for potential airport development in Thien Cam and Yen Hoa. At present, the province enjoys convenient air connectivity through two nearby airports: Vinh Airport in Nghe An Province and Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Tri Province, both accessible within approximately 45–55 minutes by car.
From a region once facing significant economic and social challenges, Ha Tinh is now undergoing a remarkable transformation driven by a well-structured development strategy and clear long-term vision. The Vung Ang Economic Zone, together with the Formosa Ha Tinh project, is one of Vietnam’s key industrial development centers. At the same time, sectors such as energy, high-tech agriculture, processing and manufacturing, and logistics are creating new momentum for comprehensive economic growth.
Beyond being a land that preserves and nurtures enduring traditional values, Ha Tinh today is steadily establishing its position on the development map of Vietnam and the wider region. The province is embracing a modern and dynamic new identity while preserving its distinctive cultural heritage.
With a strong traditional foundation, abundant natural resources, industrious and studious people, and increasingly well-developed transport infrastructure, Ha Tinh is affirming its position as a dynamic and comprehensively developing locality, opening wider doors to international integration and emerging as an attractive destination on Vietnam’s tourism and investment map.
